Adventures of Chicky

The Adventures of Chicky
First Edition

Foreword
I always wanted to write children’s book when I was young. I used to monologue in my bed every night imagining in a place full of wonders and adventures. My friends and some little kids will listen to my stories every afternoon under the shade of a tree. There is this once when I was telling a horror story to a bunch of kids when this old bearded man came to us and when the kids saw him they eventually ran to their respective homes. Sometimes the stories that I tell come from the adventure that I have with my classmates when I was in my primary years. We used to go deep into the dark and secluded woods to search for spiders. I even tried to cut classes just to look for it and go home late in the afternoon. The snakeskin that I saw and I think it belongs to a 4-5 feet boa constrictor when we were passing a huge swamp is a hair-raising experience. There are a lot of things to say about where we went as we were closing into the deep woods. It’s funny though that when were young we ignored the lurking dangers ahead and what might the consequences of our actions. I guess our mind is too young to comprehend and our curiosity blinds us to determine what is black and what is white.

I wrote this story about a year ago when I had those moments of complete clarity of thoughts. This story is about the adventures of a little chick into the world in search of his family. In doing so he made a lot of friends and discover places that only exist in his imagination.

This is for Papa Boy and Mama Perla, without you nothing in the world matters.

“Crocodilu’s Jaw”

Chapter 1
In a farm not far away there lived a family of Mr. And Mrs. Walter. The Walter’s have no children but they have Dogger, the Dalmatian house dog, were the Walter’s were fond of playing and Cathy the 5 year old soft hearted cat. The Walter’s also have sheep, cows, goats, and some horses for transporting the goods to the market. Early in the morning Mr. Walter would go to the barn and start the day by feeding the animals and check the farm for any intrusion or nomad dogs attacking the sheep. Dogger is the right hand of Mr. Walter and is in charge of security and animal organization. Cathy, on the other hand, is the source of wisdom and the high judge of all animals. It was already summer and green grasses were everywhere in the farm. Flowers are blooming and the air was cool. Trees are shading, butterflies are flapping their wings to every flower and the bees are busy buzzing around. It is the nicest time of the year and it is also good for breeding. The chickens were laying eggs; cows and goats are milking, and Dogger had become a father of four little puppies.

In the poultry, there were Father- Roster and Mother Hen sitting side by side carefully watching the eggs. Their heads were intertwined showing their love and affection to each other. Father Roster counted the number of eggs and they are 11 and Mother Hen is very excited to see them hatch. Eggs are usually white in color but there is this one egg with black spot on it where our little Chicky sleeping. After 21 days eggs were starting to hatch. Father Roster and Mother Hen were very happy eager to see their little chicks to come out. One by one each egg started to crack came out cute yellowish chick and Mother Hen put them under her big wings to warm them. Then Father Roster noticed this one egg with black spot on it. So he inspected the egg but found no crack on it so Father Roster told Mother Hen about it and they looked at the egg with sadness in their hearts. So, Father Roster knowing that Mother Hen would only make her heart sad if the egg stays in there so he rolled it down with his beak slowly and it settles to a soft grass outside the nest house. Father Roster breathed deeply and inspected the egg one more time and his hope is gone so he went back with his head down and wings sag.

Ernie and Bernie, two misfits rats, were walking together talking under the hot summer sun suddenly noticed the egg from the distance. Ernie went to the egg smells it like food in his mind.

“What are you doing?” asked Bernie.

“What do you think I’m doing? Of course I’m holding it!” Ernie replied.

“You’re not going to eat it, right? I mean this egg maybe was just accidentally moved or something and someone might be looking for it. I just don’t want to be cast out again in the farm Ernie.” Bernie begged.

“Alright, But if no one will claim it so we have to bring it home and don’t give me that sentimental crap.”

As usual, Ernie is the aggressive type and Bernie is the sentimental type. So they’ve waited for a while then another while but seem no one is looking for it.

“Time is up! We have to slice and dice this thing so we can have our dinner tonight.” Ernie excitedly wrapped the egg to his arms smiling sinisterly.

So they brought the egg to their hide out. Ernie is preparing his claws to crack the egg.

“This egg will be cracked with one strike of my claw. I’m very hungry let’s have dinner!” Ernie positioned his claw and swung it but before it reaches the egg it cracked!

Chapter 2
“What? This one is alive?” Ernie exclaimed.

“Look at his beak and his feathers are cute. Don’t you think?” Bernie carefully lifted it with his arms and swung it slowly like a child.

“What the hell are doing? It’s not a baby rat you know and it’s food you’re not supposed to play with your food!” Ernie was angry spanking Bernie to his head.

“But Ernie this one might be the answer to our prayers. If we let this one live we could have eggs more than we can chew for the rest of our lives! Do you see what I see?” Bernie’s eyes widen in excitement. Confident that Ernie will change his mind.

“But I’m hungry, what suppose do we do with it? Feed it? No way! We can hardly even look food for our selves and this? I can’t do this Bernie.” Ernie relented with a little sigh.

“If we eat him today then we will be like this for the rest of our lives, thieves, stealing from other animals in the farm hoping not get caught. Ernie, this is our chance if we blow this we will be miserable until we die as old rats.” Bernie holds Chicky in his arms caressing like a baby.

“Alright, But I will not be a apart of this nonsense and don’t rely on me for his food because I ain’t going to waste my energy for that food.”

“Thanks Ernie and you’ll never regret this” Bernie wrapped Chicky with dirty but soft cotton made cloth and sang a song for him.” Chicky was very happy to see Bernie and the two become inseparable.

Bernie took care of Chicky like his own son and Chicky thought of Bernie as his Father. They stroll down the mountain, run along the riverbank, catch some insects in the swamps, and swimming in the river during hot days. Although Bernie is not a good example in real life, he didn’t tell Chicky about it, but he taught Chicky how to be good and to give help to the one in need. So little Chicky grew up to be a better chick or shall we say chick rat.

While on dinner, the three of them, Chicky suddenly ask. “Why am I so different than you Uncle Bernie?” Ernie looks at Bernie as if he wants to burst in laughter. Bernie frowned at Ernie. Don’t mind Uncle Ernie his just tired. “Uncle Ernie?” Ernie got surprised and wanted to choke Bernie. “Yes, Uncle Ernie?” Bernie tried to regain the situation. “It doesn’t to have similar looks to be your Uncle Chicky. I love you and that will never change no matter what you look like. “Thank you Uncle Bernie and Uncle Ernie” Smiling while chewing his food.

After dinner, Chicky went to his bed and wonder up at the stars above thinking. “What is it looked like at the other side of the mountain?”, his wings on his side lying on his back. The stars are numerous and its lights are twinkling in random. The farm is very quite and the place is cool. Chicky slowly closed his eyes without even noticing it and he fell asleep.

In the morning, Bernie and Ernie were at the swamp to take a bath.

“Did you see Chicky Ernie?” Bernie look a little worried.

“Maybe his just there somewhere. You don’t have to watch him every moment you know.” Ernie took a little step backward and then run to the high placement and jumped. The water splash, big and small ripple can be seen from the water.

“Come on Bernie the water is great!”

“I don’t know. Maybe I should look for Chicky.”

“Why can’t you enjoy yourself without thinking about that damn chick? Until that chick arrives in our lives we hadn’t much fun than we used to have. Now come on!”

“Okay! And his name is Chicky not chick!”

Under the deep fathom of the swamp awakens a very monstrous animal, Crocodilu. He looked at the surface and saw two delicious preys swimming on their rounded bellies. Crocodilu has not been eating for the past three months and this will be a very big break for his stomach, grounding like hell and these two will be a quick snack for today. He slowly wiggles his tail swimming towards the unsuspecting preys as fast as lightning.

Chapter 3
“Did you hear something Ernie?” Bernie looking at the bushes from where they took off.

“I hear nothing Bernie. It must have been a figment of your imagination”

“I think I hear something and I don’t feel good about this”

“You and your imagination” Ernie swam further into the swamp but then,

“Uncle Ernie! Watch out!” On a higher ground, Chicky points to something at the back of Ernie.

“There’s your son Bernie that you’ve been worrying” Ernie move further into the deep part of the swamp.

Crocodilu surfaced his eyes and saw Ernie towards him. He moves forward with his mouth open ready to crush Ernie with its massive jaw and serrated teeth as sharp as a two bladed knife. Bernie swam to safety and Chicky is watching as the monstrous animal steadily watching his Uncle Ernie into damnation.

“I must do something.” Chicky thought.

“Help me!” Ernie shouted. Ernie saw Crocodilu in a fast pace but even if Ernie will use all his strength to swim to safety he won’t make it. Chicky hold on to a vine connected to a tree across the swamp.

“Hold on Uncle Ernie I’m coming. Chicky swung the vine like Tarzan his feathers flapping as the wind caressed Chicky’s body flying into the air. He is not afraid and he holds the vine as strong as he can.

Meanwhile, Crocodilu saw Chicky in the air to rescue Ernie didn’t waste much time and snapping Ernie into his jaw but Ernie escape. Ernie is using all his strength to escape from Crocodilu’s jaw. Crocodilu continue to snap to where Ernie went and water splash frantically as if the swamp is alive! The roaring sound could be heard all around the swamp frightening the birds from the nearby trees. Ernie was already tired and he had used-up all his strength and he could no longer move gasping for air as he was sinking! Crocodilu saw the opportunity and open his mighty jaw and…

Chicky approaching Ernie as his wings tries to reach Ernie’s hand. Ernie looking at Chicky his vision is blurring. As the mighty jaws snaps a second after Chicky holds Ernie’s hand and off they flew into the air! Chicky holds Ernie’s hand tightly and they swung into the other side of the river.

“My God you saved Ernie!” Bernie is so happy that he run towards them and give Chicky a fatherly hug.

“Are you alright Ernie?”

Ernie is still shaking and looking at the river where the crocodile was already gone.

“Thank you Chicky for saving my life.” He sobbed like a little mice and Chicky give him a hug.

“I think we should go home now before that croc tries anything.” Bernie help Ernie stand up and they walk towards home.
